Brett Sheroky Reflects In New Emotional Single “Ain’t My Place”

Brett Sheroky Ain't My Place

Last year, songwriter turned artist Brett Sheroky pulled at our heartstrings when he released “Better On Paper”,  chronicling a relationship as it falls apart, where the pictures and post-it notes declaring love quickly turned into divorce papers that they both had to sign. Now, as he is set to kick off a tour run opening for Phil Vassar, Sheroky continues the story with “Ain’t My Place”.

A simple production allows for the story to continue to unfold, as the singer stares at the house that used to be his home and takes in all of the physical outside changes that his ex has made. Your emotions are immediately awakened when you hear the opening lines “I drove by the house today, almost didn’t recognize it,” and the simple change from saying ‘our house’ to ‘the house’ kicks off the somber narrative. “I see you made room for a garden, by cutting down our tree / That ain’t what I would have wanted, but you ain’t asking me,” he sings, surveying the death of ‘their’ tree, making room for new life, new relationships in her garden and in her world. “Cause it ain’t my place to say what you should change and what you shouldn’t  / It ain’t my place to say what to do with all the space you were given when, when I’m the one who took those steps that lead to walking out the door / It ain’t my place to say, it ain’t my place anymore”

When it comes to country songs telling the truth, lyrics that have duel meaning are some of the best and “Ain’t My Place” does that brilliantly. Written by Sheroky with Charley Woods the track subtly highlights physical changes while the metaphor showcases the way the relationship has changed.

“Life isn’t always drinking beers on a tailgate, there is real stuff that happens in life and it is easy to lose sight of that being a writer in Nashville, you are under pressure to write singles,” Sheroky told us in our most recent interview.
