Brantley Gilbert ‘So Help Me God’ – Album Review

Brantley Gilbert’s new album, So Help Me God is out now, November 10th on all streaming platforms. Take a listen and read our full review below.

Over three years since the release of his Fire and Brimstone album, Brantley Gilbert is back with his sixth studio album, So Help Me God. On the ten-track collection, Gilbert co-wrote each song, enlisting some of Nashville’s biggest names and fellow artists including Jason Aldean, HARDY, Randy Montana, Toby Keith, Michael Ray, and Jelly Roll.

For the Georgia native, the time between albums was intentional, allowing him to release a project he’s happy with. “I’ve always taken a little longer than most artists, especially in this genre, to put an album out and that’s partly to do with me being a perfectionist,” Gilbert reveals. “But we’ve been looking forward to getting this album out for a long time. I’ve been blessed to sit down with some of the best writers in the country, and I feel like we’ve written some wonderful stuff.”

One of the album’s immediate standouts is its first track, “Heaven By Then,” which was born from a writer’s retreat and features special appearances by Blake Shelton and Vince Gill. On the incredibly poignant track, they sing of hoping they’re in heaven by the time the best things in life no longer exist. “No, I don’t wanna go today, but I don’t wanna live down here at a place that thinks that that place don’t exist,” They sing. “If there comes a day this country’s somewhere country don’t fit in // Hell, I hope I’m in Heaven by then.”

“It came out of a conversation,” Gilbert reveals of the track. “A guitar ended up in HARDY’s lap, which is usually a good sign that it’s about to turn into something special. I think we all knew that as it was being written. It came to life that night. To have Blake Shelton and Vince Gill on the song meant so much to me. Those two brought so much to the table and gave it a voice I didn’t have. We were all in separate places when we recorded, but it was a cool way for everyone to put their spin on it. They just did what felt natural and sonically you hear that.”

The Valory Music artist shines brightest when he slows things down, with his gruff growl emotive and powerful on songs like “Miles Of Memories” and “She’s the One.” On the incredible “How To Talk To Girls,” Gilbert grapples with being a ‘Girl Dad’, wondering how to broach hard subjects with his little girl. “’Cause this angel hangs on every word I say // She’s gettin’ so much more from me than my last name,” He sings. “Everything just like her momma // She’s got me at a loss for words // I guess I’m still learnin’ // How to talk to girls.”

The brooding “Rolex on a Redneck” enlists Jason Aldean as they celebrate all the good things that money can buy. Jelly Roll joins Gilbert on the driving, genre-bending “Son of the Dirty South,” while “The Worst Country Song of All Time” is a tongue-in-cheek romp featuring HARDY and Toby Keith. On the latter, the trio muse about all of the things that would make a country song terrible, including a chorus that goes, “I love cities and traffic jams // I don’t want a house or a piece of land // I deserve a bunch of money and a minivan // I don’t wanna earn a dime // Old Yeller didn’t make me sad // I think we should change the American flag // This is the worst country song of all time.”

 

The album ends with a one-two punch of poignancy. There’s the powerful “Gone But Not Forgotten,” a song of remembrance for those who died too young, followed by the album’s titular track. On “So Help Me God,” Gilbert is at his lowest and most vulnerable, seeking help from God to deal with his vices and not lose the woman he loves.

“So help me God, I’m gonna change // I’ll pour this bottle down the drain // Send that devil’s water to Hell where it belongs // So help me God, I’ll change her mind // I’ll walk by faith, I’ll walk that line // Lord, I’ll show hеr I can do this on my own // So help me God.”

On So Help Me God, Brantley Gilbert crafted an album that is both cohesive yet features ten standout tracks. “We wanted to put songs that sounded good together, but also songs that covered a wide variety of genre influences,” Gilbert reveals. “There’s a lot of different songwriting styles on the album. We’re super excited about it, and I can’t wait for BG Nation to hear what we’ve been working on.”

Country star, Brantley Gilbert is known for his heavy-hitting songs and truth-telling lyrics. It is not often that Gilbert lets his fans in to his softer side, but when he does, it is a true masterpiece. Today, fans get that side of the singer-songwriter with his brand new song “How To Talk To Girls.”

“The more specific I am as a writer, the more I hear other folks say ‘Man, I feel the exact same.’ When it comes to family, the love I have for my wife, son and daughter is simple and straightforward, but getting across how deep it goes is the hard part, and I think that’s something we all share,” shared Gilbert in a press release about the song.

“‘Cause this angel hangs on every word I say // She’s gettin’ so much more from me than my last name // Everything and I can’t hide it // She’s got me at a loss for words // I guess I’m still learnin’ // How to talk to girls”

Inspired by his wife and his daughter, “How To Talk To Girls” is a peek into Gilbert’s sensitive and emotional side. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, it is clear how much the artist loves his family. Vocally, the singer’s voice is at its all-time best. The new song might also be one of Gilbert’s best in his collection of songs.

Brantley Gilbert, Toby Keith, HARDY: “The Worst Country Song Of All Time”

Brantley Gilbert joins forces with Toby Keith and HARDY on “The Worst Country Song Of All Time,” available now, June 18th, on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new music.

There are few things better than a star-studded collaboration in country music. Social media blew up when fans found out that Brantley Gilbert was going to join forces with the legendary Toby Keith and one of our favorite rising stars, HARDY. The three extremely talented men officially dropped a song today that they never thought they actually would. “The Worst Country Song Of All Time” is officially out.

The idea all started when HARDY threw out the title at a write with co-writers Gilbert, Hunter Phelps, and Will Weatherly. Although all the men took it as a joke, they started throwing out line after line. Eventually, a song formed. “We were listening to the demo after we finished it, and I said to HARDY, “Man, if we get a wild hair and decide we’re actually going to cut this, would you be cool with cutting it with me?,” Gilbert shares of his collaborator in a recent press release. “I’ll never forget, he looked at me and he said, ‘Absolutely.’”

“I hate beer and honky-tonk women // And I don’t eat deer and I can’t stand fishing // I don’t know the words to Family Tradition // Folsom Prison or Walk The Line // And I think sweet tea is overrated // And all dirt roads were made for paving // Yeah this is the worst country song of all time”

Clearly, the men had something, when they received a seal of approval from Toby Keith, who is also featured on the track. “The Worst Country Song Of All Time” is one of those songs that only these trio of guys could actually release. It pokes fun at all the stereotypical ‘country boy’ things and flips it on its head. With some killer one-liners and a catchy beat, the song is a bop for sure!

We hope this collaboration will lead to even more collaboration between the talented men. Until then, make sure you jam to this one!

Brantley Gilbert’s Fire & Brimstone (Deluxe Edition) is available now, October 2nd

Brantley Gilbert, the singer-songwriter behind hit projects like the 2011 number one smash “Country Must Be Country Wide” and 2019 collaboration with Lindsay Ell “What Happens In A Small Town”, has released a deluxe edition to his latest album Fire and Brimstone. Two additional songs are featured, which allows the tracklist to extend the originally sizable project even more so with a new total of seventeen tracks.

Oftentimes, with each of Gilbert’s albums, he carries out these large collections of songs with his soft yet raspy tone among sentimental words and head-banging country party anthems, and Fire and Brimstone is no different.

One of the two new tracks, “Hard Days” may already be familiar to country fans as it was released back in June. This song focuses on experiencing difficult times in order to feel and, essentially, deserve the good days.

The second addition to the album, “Old Friends” follows the same approach while reflecting on the good old days in relation to where you stand today. More specifically, the song is a shout out to friends who have been the reason for specific memories and enjoyable experiences. The lyrics take an intriguing perspective on maintaining long-term relationships in order to cherish such times with those people who have stayed around since “you can’t make old friends” and “you can’t turn back time”.

Fire & Brimstone (Deluxe Edition) is a continuation of Gilbert’s well-known style that consists of unexpected melodies and heartfelt dedications that portray an attractive vulnerability. Innocence and charm are readily and openly laid out through countless ballads. At the same time, songs such as “Fire’t Up” successfully achieve a hardcore country song that gets the crowd fired up.

Brantley Gilbert Releases “Hard Days” During A Crucial Time

Brantley Gilbert provides us with a small sense of hope in his new release, “Hard Days”. The naturally rough voice of this Georgia native mixed with the desperate tone over these plainly honest lyrics creates a sense of enlightenment.

“This song means a lot to me,” he states in a press release. “It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a song that can stand on its own lyrically. Brock Berryhill, Logan Wall, Jimi Bell, and Jay Brunswick gave me the opportunity to work with them, and it’s something I’m extremely proud to be a part of. I feel like all of us are in need of a little bit of healing and in need of a little bit of hope. And this song offers that.”

“If you never had hard days / If you never had a heartbreak / Never had more than you can take / Or carried the weight / Of life on your shoulders / Would you feel like you earned it? / Would you live with a purpose? / Or ever known your own strength / If you never had hard days?”

This song is one of many releases that have been given to the public during these difficult last few months. It comes at a time when every listener, every person, every soul, can empathize and interpret the message in the same way with a similar story.

This song is a reminder that sometimes all those hard days, and there will be countless, establish strength and a sense of purpose; the will for a better life and the courage to attain it.

Brantley Gilbert Partners with FVC & Musically Fed for 2020 Tour

If you didn’t love Brantley Gilbert before, you’ll fall head over heels for him now. Gilbert just announced his 2020 Fire’t Up Tour, and this is not your regular run of the mill tour. Not only does he have back-to-back Platinum albums and a fanbase across the nation, but he also has a heart for leading and service.

Partnering with local farmer heroes to celebrate and boost local communities of the tour, Gilbert has set a standard for the way the music industry manages itself. No more selfless indulging but instead taking care of the places the artists visit, creating connections and giving back to thousands of people across the nation. He has partnered with Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC), an organization helping veterans pursue careers in farming, to purchase products for catering all along the tour. These veterans and farmers are the backbone of the United States and supporting and thanking them is Gilbert’s goal for this endeavor.

Lindsay Ell’s Vocals Shine on Haunting New Balled, “I Don’t Love You”

Lindsay Ell, Canadian born singer-songwriter wears her heart on her sleeve for her newly released single, “I Don’t Love You”. The release of this ballad accompanies an exciting first for the artist: a #1 American country radio single for her duet with Brantley Gilbert, “What Happens in a Small Town”. Earlier this year, Ell joined forces with country music veteran Brantley Gilbert to release this jam that has climbed the charts over the past few months.

We’re super excited for the up-and-coming singer and can’t wait for the momentum to keep going with “I Don’t Love You”. Prior to the official release, Ell teased the song during various live sets. After much anticipation, the studio version holds just as much emotion and exceeds fan expectations. The beautiful song shares the singer’s personal experience of going through a breakup, using a haunting amount of detail.

“I don’t open up a bottle with my dinner / ‘Cause I know that it’s just gonna sit out on the counter / And go bad just like the leftovers / You said to leave at the restaurant / I don’t go to anymore ‘cause I won’t go alone”

Ell opens up the song reflecting on her new reality of loneliness, while cleverly embedding memories from her lost relationship into the lyrics. The calming melody and soft guitar twangs throughout the verse bring the listener into a feeling of nostalgia and help build up to the powerful chorus. The Canada native belts into a heartbreaking and dramatic chorus, passionately singing the simple words: “I don’t love you baby / I don’t love you / No, I don’t love you anymore”  Ell’s vocals shine not only during the memorable chorus but throughout the song where she brings listeners on an emotional journey from start to finish.

We’re all very excited to hear what’s next in this new chapter of music. For now, we can catch the rising star take the stage at the 53rd Annual CMA Awards on November 13th.

NYCS First Impression: Brantley Gilbert ‘Fire and Brimstone’

Brantley Gilbert’s fifth album Fire & Brimstone is here, and it was worth waiting for. The 15-track album shows us a side of the country rebel that we don’t see too often. It’s filled with personal tracks about Gilbert’s struggles, marriage, and what it’s like to be a father. But don’t worry, Gilbert didn’t forget about the fans who enjoy his wild side as there are also quite a few fun and laidback songs that we are used to hearing from the singer-songwriter. What makes this album extra special is Gilbert either wrote or co-wrote each title. As soon as you hit play, you’re in for a ride.

The album starts off with “Fire’t Up.” Written by Gilbert, Brandon Day, and Justin Weaver, the guitar-driven track was the right choice to get the party started. It’s aimed at the artist’s fans who enjoy getting a little rowdy on the weekend. Continuing the party vibe but different from the usual alcohol party anthems we are used to, “Welcome to Hazeville” is a song honoring weed. The track came out just in April just in time for 4/20 and features Colt Ford, Lukas, and the iconic Willie Nelson, who is known for being vocal about marijuana. Written by Gilbert, Rodney Clawson, Andrew DeRoberts, and Ford, it has a mellow tune and does a good job mixing country and rap.

After starting out with the rock anthems, Gilbert takes us along for a personal journey. The first single and the track that completed the album, “What Happens in a Small Town” featuring Lindsay Ell quickly became a fan favorite and is currently climbing its way up the country charts. It’s the singer’s first duet with a female, and it doesn’t disappoint.  It tells a story about the Georgia native’s journey with his wife Amber and all the ups and downs they went through before ending up together. While it may be a song about Gilbert, it’s relatable to anyone who has had a rocky road in their relationship.

Continuing with the emotional vibe, the title track “Fire & Brimstone” shows off Gilbert’s vocals and writing skills as he wrote the song by himself.  Featuring Jamey Johnson and Alison Krauss, the acoustic track gets personal about Gilbert’s relationship with God and how he feels like he is perceived in the world.  The way the three voices overlap in the bridge really adds to the emotion.

Gilbert holds nothing back on this album, especially how he feels about his wife. “Man of Steel” shares how he wants to be there for his wife, no matter what life throws at them. Written by Gilbert, Brock Berryhill, and Cole Taylor, the track shows how strong the couple’s marriage is and the love he has for her. Superman may be a fictional character, but Gilbert does what he can to be a real-life hero. “Never Gonna Be Alone” piggybacks off that, with a faster tempo, he lets Amber know that she is never going to be alone.

The heartfelt “Man That Hung the Moon” ends the album. Inspired by Gilbert’s son and newborn daughter, the singer-songwriter goes into how life has changed becoming a father and hopes that one day his kids will accept him for the mistakes he made and who he turned out to be. Written solely by Gilbert, it puts the icing on the cake to a great album.

We’ve waited three years for this album and it most certainly did not disappoint. Seeing this side of Gilbert is something we can get used to. The singer-songwriter is celebrating Fire and Brimstone by hitting the road. First up is his second annual Kick It In The Sun Cruise where the singer-songwriter will be joined by Chase Rice, LANCO, Diamond Rio, Tyler Farr, Danielle Bradbury, Jon Langston, Colt Ford, Tyler Rich, SixForty1, Trea Landon, Sam Grow, Tyler Braden, Brian Davis, Tyler Booth, and more.

In January, Gilbert will be headed out on the Fire’t Up Tour with Rice, Dylan Scott, and Brandon Lay. They’ll kick things off in London, Ontario. Check out brantleygilbert.com to see if they’ll be stopping in your city!

Brantley Gilbert Releases Emotional Video for “Man That Hung The Moon”

Ever since becoming a father, Brantley Gilbert has shared just how much being a father really means to him and created a very personal song to dedicate to his children. Gilbert shared on Instagram, “One of these days my son and future daughter are gonna realize I’m no superhero…. When I have to tell them I’m not the man that hung the moon…. if I’ve done my job right… they’ll know to hit their knees to find the Man who did.”

Getting inspiration in the hospital room when his son Barrett was born, Gilbert sings, “Lost my breath when I saw you take your first / My whole world stopped like that / And I ain’t the cryin’ type / But I just saw your eyes / Words just can’t describe what I see / You look just like me.”

The “Man That Hung The Moon” video perfectly shows the affection the Georgia native and his family have for each other. Clips put together from time in the studio, on the road, and his personal life, fans get an inside look at the balance Gilbert keeps. The passionate video starts with Gilbert getting up on stage after stage every night to perform but you can tell on his face backstage that he is missing something. Fast forward to clips of his son walking around the tour buses and his wife Amber out on the road and in the studio. Barrett seems to love being on the road and getting ice cream with his dad and watching the shows backstage with his mom. While touring keeps the family busy, they make an effort to have uninterrupted time on the road and to enjoy each other’s company. Gilbert and his wife are expecting a little girl early fall and a new album is rumored to be released about the same time. The tough country singer has turned a page, soon to be a father of two, sharing a more personal side to him in each song he releases.
