Hannah Ellis Shares Her New Song “Us” in an Exclusive Interview

Hannah Ellis’ new song, “Us” is out today, October 1st, on all streaming platforms. Learn more about the brand new track below.

Hannah Ellis released her new song, “Us”, which will be impacting country radio on October 25th. We chatted with the singer-songwriter herself about all things “Us”, Opry, wine, marriage, and more.

It’s been a whirlwind of a year for Hannah Ellis: she signed a record deal, got married to fellow singer-songwriter Nick Wayne, made her Opry debut, and released new music, among other things. Her music is autobiographical, and she acknowledges this in her new single “Us”. The uptempo, driving country jam is specific to her relationship with Wayne, but also completely relatable to the audience.

“You and me will always be us // Like comin’ home headlights always mean your truck //  Like leanin’ in’s always gonna be // my red wine lips mixed with your whiskey kiss Friday nights // Like your right hand’s always gonna be in mine // Some things just fit perfectly // Like an old t-shirt and Levi jeans // You and me will always be us”

“We were talking about how long Nick and I had been together, and how it doesn’t matter if I’m making my Opry debut, or if we are just riding in his truck afterwards going to Taco Bell – we are always us,” Ellis explains. “We are always the same and I know that we are going to be that way forever. As we were writing the song, we realized, everyone has that person. It can be a lover, a friend, or family… that person that makes everything make sense.”

Ellis had the opportunity to debut the song during her own Grand Ole Opry debut, and her moment in the circle is one that she will remember forever. “I think I knew I would be very emotional when I stood in the circle for the first time. I was honestly overwhelmed with emotion and it was a magical experience. Getting to announce “Us” as my radio single at the Opry and sing that for the first time was amazing.”

The music video for “Us” premiered on October 2nd, and features young music video assistants turned couple at the beginning of their relationship and parallels Ellis and Wayne’s own courtship. It mirrors the song perfectly.

Ellis has been making incredible music in Nashville for many years, and it’s exciting that the rest of the world is about to catch up and realize what a special talent she truly is. For those who don’t know her yet, Ellis is bound to take over country music with her soulful voice and unique writing style.

Hannah Ellis Releases New Song “Home And A Hometown”

Hannah Ellis’ new song, “Home And A Hometown” is out now, August 27th, on all streaming platforms.  Take a look below as we dig into the track.

We have been big fans of Hannah Ellis for many years now. We first fell in love with Ellis when we heard “Would You Love Me”, a song she co-wrote for Russell Dickerson’s debut album Yours, and then hosted her at our Women’s Brunch back in March 2018 where she sang that song along with her first single “ILY So What”.  Check out our full recap from that event here. Today, the newly signed Curb Records artist releases her popular song “Home And A Hometown.”

The song is a special one. It is Ellis’ story of falling in love and feeling at home in Nashville, but still finding herself missing and loving her hometown. The songstress shared, “I realized that I love both places so much for different reasons and it occurred to me that I have a home and a hometown. I came home to Nashville and wrote the song that week.”

“Cause I got a highway and I got a backroad // I got a fast-paced life and a place I go to move slow // One I wanna make it, one I wanna make proud // No matter which one I’m leavin’ I still wanna turn around // ‘Cause I got a home and I got a hometown”

In just a few more weeks, Ellis will share the song on one of the most prestigious stages in Nashville. She makes her Opry debut on September 28th. Then shortly after, Ellis will release her next single “Us.” 2021 is sure to be a huge year for the rising star!

Nick Wayne Features Hannah Ellis on The Hauntingly Beautiful “Drunk Again”

Nick Wayne Drunk Again

Nick Wayne and Hannah Ellis have two of the best voices in country music. On January 10th, they released a duet titled “Drunk Again” that is heartfelt and honest in both its lyrical content and delivery. The two up-and-comers, who happen to also be dating, sound like they were made to sing together.

“I ain’t ever getting drunk again,” Wayne croons on the opening line. The words bounce off the walls and go right back into Wayne’s cup. He repeats the phrase several times throughout the song as if he’s talking himself out doing something he knows he’ll regret in the morning. The first verse is Wayne promising not to get drunk again: he lays the bottle down, removes the cap, and pours out the remains of the alcohol. By doing this, he feels like he can escape missing his ex.

The song without Ellis’ added harmony would still be incredible, but when her vocals hit in the chorus, it’s as if you didn’t know what you were missing before. Their voices together are rich and it adds so much emotion.

“Drunk Again” was co-written by Wayne, Joe Ginsberg and the queen of writing vulnerable songs, Emily Shackelton. Shackelton is one of the writers behind Carly Pearce’s “Every Little Thing”, a song that holds that same feeling of longing and despair.

Wayne and Ellis’ vocals are haunting, and Josh Kerr, who produced the song elevated everything. There’s a particular type of captivation in all of Kerr’s production that makes any project sound cinematic. At the end of a chorus, instead of letting a beat drop like most would, Kerr has this little fade in that sounds as if the world the artist and listener are in is caving, and it’s just for a split second. The build up of intensity throughout the 3 minute and 21 second song makes it hypnotic.

“Drunk Again” is a really special song. It’s one to turn up all the way when you hear it; it’s impossible for it to ever be background noise. Wayne and Ellis should sing together more often because they seem to not only be in harmony but completely in sync.

To keep up with Nick Wayne, follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Hannah Ellis

Hannah Ellis

We’ve loved championing Hannah Ellis over the past few years, watching her career blossom and watching her release great song after great song. We realized that although we’ve featured her in a Swag Session (below) as well as had her as our guest musical artist at our very first Babes, Booze & Brunch event we haven’t really learned about her backstory so this week she is our Swag Spotlight.

Growing up in a small town, Campbellsville, Kentucky, Ellis grew up with two parents who were both wedding singers, always instilling a love for music from early on. She, of course, was influenced by 90s country, artists like Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw but she also listened to gospel music as well as 90s R&B.

She received a full scholarship to college but felt a pull towards making music while she was still in high school. Her parents told her that they would help fund her musical career as long as she attended school. She scheduled her classes at the University of Kentucky for the middle of the week and drove to Nashville on Fridays, making the most out of networking and making connections on the weekends. Officially making the move to Nashville after graduation in 2012 she tells us “It’s been so special, just because, doing it while you are driving back and forth from school is not ideal, but it really helped me to grow in my own way before I got here. I had the luxury of not growing up in front of my peers during those crucial discovery years.”

Back in 2017, Ellis was inducted into the CMT Next Women of Country class and most recently she joined her friends Cassadee Pope and Clare Dunn on the CMT Next Women of Country Tour which we caught when it made its stop in NYC this April. “I remember when I found out, my heart, my stomach turned over I remember going to my first ever CMT Next Woman event back in 2014 and that was the year Kelsea [Ballerini] played, it was the first time I saw her play, and ironically enough, I found this picture, Gavin DeGraw was at that event and I got a picture with him, the world is so weird,” she laughs, as she just recently wrapped up touring with the pop singer-songwriter.

Her current single, “Friends Like These” was written with Melissa Fuller and Jason Massey after Ellis had a night out with some of her friends around town. “We just started talking about how some of our favorite memories that we’ve ever made, with friends from high school or college, some of my favorites were the ones we didn’t know we were making or the ones we didn’t go out planning to make,” she says. “Even though I wrote it about my friends when I sing it for these people in the crowd, it’s my anthem to them and for them because they are who I am spending my nights with and who I am hanging out with until 3 am and I love it.”

She spent the summer promoting her new single and on the road with pop singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw. DeGraw who is most famous for songs like “Not Over You” and the theme song to One Tree Hill, “I Don’t Wanna Be” continues to impress and gain fans with his relatable lyrics, something Ellis explains she thinks is at the heart of her genre, country music. She tells us how welcoming his entire team was, how grateful she is for his mentorship during their summer together. We caught the tour last month at The Paramount out on Long Island, and we were so impressed to see Ellis perform for fans who she wouldn’t usually get to tap into on a regular country tour. “People tell me, ‘I don’t typically listen to country music but I love your stuff, you are winning me over’ and as an artist that feels so good for me personally but also good for our genre. We want others to realize we are making competitive music here.”

Looking ahead, Ellis tells us she is so excited about what is coming up in the new year and looks forward to releasing more music and meeting and making new fans. We can’t wait to continue to champion Hannah, an artist we truly love and believe in.

To keep up with Hannah Ellis be sure to follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and for all of her upcoming tour dates head to hannahellismusic.com.

6 Undiscovered Female Artists You Should Be Listening To

We’re loving the changing of the tides that is occurring in the country music scene. It’s been an exciting month for the ladies, as Maren Morris’ song “GIRL” went number 1 on country radio and Grammy-nominated songwriter, Nicolle Galyon unveiled her newest project, an all-female label named Songs & Daughters.

Female musicians are making sure their voices are heard in the industry and delivering songs with lyrics that aim to empower women. We’ve already shared 6 of our favorite rising female artists that we are loving, but here are 6 more undiscovered, yet extremely talented female artists that deserve the spotlight too!

1. Lacy Cavalier

Listen: “Cheating On U”

One of our newest Swag Sessions alumni, Lacy Cavalier is taking the music industry by storm! She is sassy, beautiful, and passionate, with killer vocals to match. At only 22 years old, it’s only a matter of time until everyone knows her name. She just released her newest EP, k i’m done, which is filled with heartfelt, honest, and relatable songs that will be stuck in your head in no time! Make sure to give it a listen and keep up with her via Instagram and Twitter.

2. Hailey Whitters

Listen: “Ten Year Town”

Singer-songwriter Hailey Whitters is one to look out for! She’s no stranger to the music industry, as she’s been songwriting since she was a teenager. Currently, she is holding her own on tour with prolific singer-songwriter, Lori McKenna and we caught her set just last month at City Winery. Later this year, she will open for superstar Maren Morris. Whitters is poised, honest, and primed for success. Listen to her song “10 Year Town” to get a taste of her unique talent and be sure to follow her on Instagram and Twitter.

3. Hannah Ellis

Listen: “Friends Like These”

Another artist that we are loving is Hannah Ellis. She performed at our inaugural ‘Babes, Booze & Brunch’ event back in 2018, as well as, opened for Walker Hayes at Mercury Lounge the same year. She is a clever lyricist and songstress that truly sings from her heart. Check out debut single, “ILY So What” and “Home and Hometown” which she sang for us during a live Swag Session back in 2018. Most recently, she was chosen as one of CMT’s Next Women of Country and released her brand new single, “Friends Like These.” Keep up with her endeavors via Instagram and Twitter!

4. Renee Blair

Listen: “Girlfriend”

Our next artist signed a publishing deal with SMACK in 2017 and has been a powerhouse ever since. She’s opened up for many great performers in the industry, including Mitchell Tenpenny, Willie Nelson, and Michael Ray; however, she is a stunning performer in her own right. She premiered her newest song “Girlfriend,” earlier this month, which explores the inner workings of her heart as she wishes for a man, who is unfortunately in a relationship. Both a Swag Spotlight and Swag Sessions alum, we know how spectacular Blair is and can’t wait for more people to recognize her talent. Stay in the loop via her Instagram and Twitter.

5. Lauren Duski

Listen: “The Weather (Grandpa’s Song)”

Lauren Duski got her start on NBC’s The Voice, but she is proving her staying power with her independently released debut EP entitled Midwestern Girl. She plays with the gamut of emotions on the heartfelt record, especially on songs, “The Weather (Grandpa’s Song)” and fan-favorite “Costume Party.” She earned her spot on this list because of her beautiful songs and unique song-writing. Learn more about Duski in our Swag Spotlight with her, as well as, by following her on Instagram and Twitter.

6. Kelleigh Bannen

Listen: “Happy Birthday”

Rounding out our list is seasoned singer-songwriter, Kelleigh Bannen. The Nashville native is a vocally-gifted storyteller. She delivers epic lyrics in her songs, “Happy Birthday,” “Deluxe,” and her newest track, “Faith In You.” Bannen is an artist, who is equally as impressive on emotionally-heavy songs, as well as, sassy uptempo tracks. We featured her in a Swag Spotlight back in 2018, and we can’t wait to see where her career continues to take her. Be sure to follow her on Instagram and Twitter.

We hope you add these talented ladies to your music collection!

CMT’s Next Women Of Country Sells-Out New York’s Gramercy Theatre

Hannah Ellis CMT Next Women of Country

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

This past Friday, the CMT Next Women Of Country Tour rolled around to New York City to play one of their 11-dates here at the Gramercy Theatre in lower Manhattan. Luckily for us New Yorkers, we got to experience this sold-out show with three extremely talented women Hannah Ellis, Clare Dunn, and Cassadee Pope.

Kicking off the night Hannah Ellis opened up the show with just her and her guitarist going straight into her upbeat debut single, “ILY So What,” getting everyone pumped up for the night ahead. Right off the bat, the crowd was already singing along, leaving Ellis mind blown she mentioned, “Someone should tell you, I can see you, and I am feeling it! Here for it! My name is Hannah Ellis and I am so excited to be here in New York hanging out with you guys on the CMT Next Women Of Country Tour!… This next one is my current single that I just put out about two weeks ago, it’s called “Your Woman.”

CMT Next Women of Country

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

In between each song, the singer-songwriter took the time to chat with the crowd about what was coming up next. Before going into her next song she said, “So I’m a full-time singer-songwriter out in Nashville and the fact that someone pays me dollars every day to go in a room and talk about my emotions is kinda incredible. I’m not going to lie, but this next song is one that I wrote with two people that I love very much.” Slowing it down for a song, she sang “Never In Love,” before bringing it back up to cover a song we all know and love, “No Diggity” by Blackstreet. Showcasing her talent she drifted away from country to show off her R&B side, getting the crowd fired up singing and dancing along to her rendition.

As her set was coming to an end she had one more song left, she began by getting personal saying, “Sometimes it’s hard for me to know exactly what to say about this next song because as a songwriter you write so many songs and you never know what is going to happen with them, if your going to be the only person to ever hear them or if they go out there and create their own life and I released this song last July. It’s just a song about how much I love where I come from and the people that raised me but I also love where I ended up and I think a lot of New Yorkers get that…This song has been really amazing to watch it create its own life…and it’s just really special for me.” Closing out her set with her hit single, “Home and A Hometown.” Ellis had the entire crowd singing back the words, getting everyone ready for what was to come next.

CMT Next Women of Country

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

Next up was Clare Dunn, kicking off her set with her song “Ferrari” the country rocker switched it up a bit from Ellis’ set playing guitar alongside a full band. From the very start, she was showcasing her insane guitar skills shredding it like a true rockstar. Before going any further into the night, Dunn put her guitar down and took the time to speak with the crowd making the night extra special by saying, “New York! We’re going to do something very special here tonight. We are going to film a live music video so we hope you’re okay with that. So be sure and cheer really loud for it, this is my brand new single that just came out called “My Love” and you’re going to be in the video!” The crowd was ready, dancing along to the tune while cheering as she gave her all for the music video. After the shot was done, everyone was fired up and ready for the rest of the night ahead.

As the night went on Dunn picked her guitar back up to continue her set, playing a mix of singles as well as covers, hitting all her bases she sang her singles, “Cowboy Side of You,” and “More,” as well as her song “Go To It.” That wasn’t all, she did a variety of covers starting with “Her Strut” by Bob Seger, mentioning how she had to perform this song because she had the honor and privilege of a lifetime to tour with him. Touching base with the audience of all ages, she then covered a song everyone knows “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele. The entire crowd erupted in cheers, singing back the lyrics to the popular song.

CMT Next Women of Country

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

With Dunn’s set coming to an end, she couldn’t leave the stage without singing her most popular song yet mentioning to the crowd, “I’d like to talk to you a little bit about this next song and just say thank you for changing my life, you guys set a bunch of records with this song…this was just a personal little love song for me and I never dreamed that it would be the success that it was so thank you…Thank you for all the love that you have shown me so passionately on this song if you know it sing along it’s called “Tuxedo.” Belting out the lyrics, the crowd sang back every word making it a moment to never forget. Before ending her set she had one more cover, closing out with no other than “Rock and Roll” by Led Zeppelin once again showing off her master guitar skills.

CMT Next Women of Country

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

Last up was the headliner herself, Cassadee Pope kicking off her set performing her past uptempo single “Take You Home.” Not stopping there she continued playing her songs “I Wish I Could Break Your Heart,” and “How I Feel Right Now,” before taking a moment to chat with the crowd saying, “I love New York City so much, this is one of my favorite places to visit in general but oh my gosh to play a show here forget about it! So my name’s Cassadee Pope and this is the CMT Next Women Of Country Tour!… This has been such an amazing tour because not only do I get to go out on tour with my friends but I’m sharing these new stories that I just released on my new album Stages…I would love to play you this song it’s my single, Hannah Ellis co-wrote it, its called “If My Heart Had A Heart.” Singing her emotional ballad the crowd sang along softly.

CMT Next Women of Country

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

Pope kept the crowd on their toes waiting to hear what song was up next, covering the one and only Third Eye Blind singing their hit single “Never Let You Go.” The crowd erupted in cheers shouting out the lyrics as the singer-songwriter sang her rendition of the tune. After the rap part of the song, she was so amazed by the crowd she stopped midway saying, “Oh my gosh you guys know the most lyrics than any tour date on this tour so far. I couldn’t help myself, I referenced Third Eye Blind in another song of mine and I just had to add a little bit of Third Eye Blind during my set. So we got two chorus’s left, your already singing along so just continue to do that!” Finishing out the song strong, everyone was screaming out the lyrics, ending the jam on the right note.

CMT Next Women of Country

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

Throughout her set she performed her songs “11,” “I’ve Been Good,” “Distracted,” “Gavi,” “Champagne,” and her duet with Chris Young “Think Of You.” Pope put her beautiful vocals on full display, showcasing her raw talent to the crowd while they sang along to every song. She couldn’t end her set without bringing  Hannah and Clare back to the stage to perform one last time. Mentioning to the crowd, “I mean after all this is the Next Women Of Country Tour so you didn’t think we’re not going to sing together and I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to sing with you guys. So this was actually my finale song on The Voice! Thank you by the way for anybody who voted for me you changed my life. One of my biggest influences is Faith Hill so I figured we would sing this together, this one is called “Cry.” Combining their talents they brought the song to life as their voices intertwined flawlessly.

As the night was coming to an end Pope mentioned how excited she was to be back in New York City performing for a sold-out crowd, thanking everyone once again for coming out before performing her single “One More Red Light.” Before leaving the stage for good she had two more songs left to perform as part of her encore. Taking it back to the old days she said, “Okay I’ll play a few more, I know I mentioned this earlier but I used to be in a band called Hey Monday and NYC was a second home to me because of that band so I couldn’t come here and headline a show in NYC and not play a Hey Monday song so we are going to take it back to 2008, here we go!” The entire crowd erupted in screams while everyone rushed the stage to get as close as possible. Pope transported the 2019 crowd back to 2008 as she performed Hey Monday’s popular song “Homecoming.” Performing the ultimate jamming out song everyone sang back the words as if no time had passed. Ending the night on a high note she continued the hype by performing her debut single “Wasting All These Tears” from her first album Frame By Frame.

Hannah Ellis Gets Personal With New Track “Your Woman”

Hannah Ellis Your Woman

Here at NY Country Swag, we love to champion rising country artists throughout their careers. One of those talented artists, Hannah Ellis just released her first new song of 2019, “Your Woman.” The singer-songwriter and one of CMT’s Next Women of Country is a Swag Sessions alum, as well as, performed at our first ever ‘Babes, Booze, and Brunch’ last year.

Ellis’ new single “Your Woman,” is a sassy and clever track that is sure to encourage repeat spins. The lyrics describe the songstress’ personality, giving fans an inside scoop into who she is as a person. Ultimately a love song, the track is a unique take on feeling blessed to be in a good relationship. Written by Ellis along with Parker Welling and Casey Brown, it is an anthem for that good woman in your life.

“I’m a southern saying on a church marquee / I’m a little bit flirty with tequila in me / I’m level headed til I’m not / I can’t sleep when I’m hot / I’m an FM radio turned up loud / I live big city, but I talk small town / You could say that I’m a lot / Add it all up and you got / Your woman.”

Just prior to the release, she shared a sweet sentiment on her Instagram, stating “BABES! I’m so excited that my brand new song #YourWoman is out tomorrow! This song is so special to me and I can’t wait for you all to hear it.” Like her song, Ellis is completely relatable and humble, which makes us love her just as much as we love the new song.

New Yorkers can catch Ellis, alongside fellow CMT Next Women of Country songstresses Cassadee Pope and Clare Dunn at the Gramercy Theatre on Friday, April 26th. Find tickets for the show here. Head to hannahellismusic.com for more information.

It was an exciting day for the women of Nashville yesterday (Nov. 13), as CMT announced the newest class of its Next Women of Country program, which highlights the genre’s next big female superstars. Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild was on hand to induct the newest class of featured women, while Maren Morris received the 2018 Impact Award, presented to a woman who has, according to CMT, “made lasting contributions to songwriting, recording, radio airplay, record sales, streams, media impressions, awards and touring in country music over the past year.”

The 2019 Next Women of Country are many of our favorites, including Anna Vaus, Emily Hackett, Ingrid Andress, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Duski, Leah Turner, Rachel Wammack, Stephanie Quayle and Tenille Townes.

In addition to celebrating the future of females in country, CMT announced it’s sixth CMT Next Women of Country Tour, to be headlined by a member of CMT’s first class of “Next Women,” Cassadee Pope. The 2019 outing marks the former Voice winner’s first headlining tour, and she’ll be joined on tour by Clare Dunn and Hannah Ellis. Nick Wayne Releases Debut Project, ‘Two Sides’

Nick Wayne

After signing a publishing deal in 2016 with Black River Entertainment, Nick Wayne’s voice and songwriting talent has finally been released to the world. Wayne has been performing his songs around Nashville for a while now and finally on October 19, the day finally arrived that he released recorded music. Two Sides includes two tracks, “How Do I Get Close” and “If You Ever Wanna” which feature Wayne’s distinct vocals, crazy range, and insanely scary good songwriting skills. It won’t be long until the country music scene notices his catchy, well-written songs.

”How Do I Get Close” is a heartbreak ballad that proves he’s a vocal powerhouse. His vocal range transitions with such ease. Wayne performing this track live is a goosebumps experience. This track has a touch of soul and the blues brought into country. He usually performs this song with Hannah Ellis and Josh Kerr, who are also the co-writers. They’re all best friends and not to mention Ellis being Wayne’s longtime girlfriend, their harmonies blend perfectly together. Ellis is also featured in the music video for “How Do I Get Close.” Following that vulnerable track, “If You Ever Wanna” is a catchy, upbeat melody written by Wayne and Justin Ebach that shows his “other side” and what he’s capable of.

Recently, he opened up for Maren Morris at Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den and undoubtedly will get more opportunities to showcase his talent. These debut tracks are just enough to capture your attention and keep you impatiently waiting for Wayne’s future projects.
