Opry City Stage Closes It’s Doors…

It is with great sadness that we share the announcement that Opry City Stage, New York City’s first 4-level country music honky tonk, has shut it’s doors.

Opry City Stage, the first spin-off of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, opened a few short months ago in December 2017. Upon entering the magnificent venue, guests were immediately transported to a place that seemed far outside of the New York City norm. Greeted by cowboy hat wearing staff and immediately having the opportunity to shop the venue’s general store, guests could head upstairs to the full service 2-floor restaurant which featured live music, dining and a bar, or continue to the 4th floor, “The Studio” where private and intimate events were held.

Although New York is statistically one of the largest markets for country music and what we believe is very underserved, it seems that the Times Square venue was just not completely prepared for the fast paced reality of New York City.

It was announced today that the parent company, Ryman Hospitality Properties, is temporarily suspending operations at the New York City location as the company evaluates the venue’s market positioning, concept and operating strategy.

Colin Reed, chairman and chief executive officer of Ryman Hospitality Properties issued the following statement:

“As we have shared over the past several months, our Opry City Stage venue has taken longer to ramp up its operations than we initially anticipated and has unfortunately underperformed our revenue expectations this year. We have decided that suspending operations at Opry City Stage while we evaluate the venue’s ground floor experience and operations is the appropriate course of action.

I would like to thank both our New York City-based employees as well as the artists who have performed at Opry City Stage for bringing an authentic slice of Southern culture to life in Times Square. We look forward to sharing more details in the months ahead.”

The History – Back in October 2017, Stephanie & Christina of NYCountry Swag took a trip down to Nashville where the Opry team treated us to a special tour of the incredible venue and it’s rich history. Sharing the story of the Grand Ole Opry, exploring the memorabilia and catching the live show helped us to capture a better idea of what to expect in New York City. When it came time to check out the NYC location, we were amazed at how much thought and detail went into everything from the design of the space to the menu, truly bringing an authentic taste of Nashville to New York. Brett Young and Carly Pearce Play Opry City Stage for ‘Front and Center’ Taping

Brett Young & Carly Pearce at Opry City Stage for Front and Center

Last night (Sept. 17), New York country fans kicked off the week with a special double episode taping of Front and Center at Opry City Stage. Front and Center is a commercial-free, all-music program that airs nationwide, on public television. Guests had about three days to purchase tickets before the hot event sold out, but NYCountry Swag followers had the opportunity to win their way in all weekend long through our exclusive giveaway contest.

Fans fortunate enough to attend had the privilege of experiencing two superstars in the making, Carly Pearce and Brett Young. The episode will air in spring of 2019, on PBS. The show will be cut down to a one-hour special, but we have your inside look of what you can expect next year.

To start the night, Nash FM 94.7’s Katie Neal and Jesse Addy took the stage to give the audience a run-down of how things were going to work. Since fans were a part of filming, Addy made sure the crowd knew one thing,“If you hear a song the second time, it’s the first time… and it’s amazing!” The dynamic duo got the sold out crowd fired up and ready for the first half of the night with CMT award-winning artist, Carly Pearce.

Pearce kicked off her set with her high-energy song “Careless”, getting the crowd pumped for what’s to come. The singer got the chance to perform almost every song on her record including crowd favorites like “Color” and “If My Name Was Whiskey” along with her very first number one song and debut single, “Every Little Thing”. Throwing some 90’s Country into the mix, Pearce gave a flawless cover of Shania Twain’s, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” before bringing it back to her Dollywood days with Dolly Parton’s, “9 to 5”.

Throughout the taping she talked with the crowd showing off her fun-loving-sassy personality, giving her backstory, talking about her job with the one and only Dolly Parton and mentioning the fact that she has played the Grand Ole Opry over 50 times already, giving everyone the order to go experience the Opry themselves.

The rising country star slayed each song with her outstanding vocals, never missing a beat. Before leaving the stage she said, “I got one song left Y’all and I just want to say thank you ‘Front and Center’ for having me. Thank you, Grand Ole Opry for having me and thank all of you for showing up, New York City… I have one question left for you, Do I have any wine drinkers in New York City!?” Closing out her set with her current single, “Hide The Wine” as everyone in the audience sang the lyrics right back to her.

Next up was multi-platinum artist, Brett Young, kicking things off with his brand new single, “Here Tonight”. Young’s set was filled with songs from his debut album, from his list of number one singles to crowd-favorites like “Left Side Of Leavin'” and “Makin’ Me Say”.

Brett Young at Opry City Stage

Adding fun covers to the mix, Young threw in his version of The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”, which he often performs while touring. With a New York City show, it was only fitting for the singer to cover Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You”, while the excited crowd sang along from beginning to end. Later, Young mashed up his fourth #1 single, “Mercy” with Marshmello and Khalid’s hit single “Silence”, putting a unique and tender twist on the EDM heavy song. Check out our exclusive video of the mash-up here.

Mid-set, Young’s band exited the stage, leaving only himself on acoustic and another guitarist. He told the audience, “Everybody covers this song, so in turn it’s pretty cliche that I’m about to cover this, but I just don’t care”, before singing a stunning cover of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. Young’s cover proved to be anything but cliche. His rendition was breathtaking, showing off his incredible talent.

As the night went on, he interacted with the crowd, at one point even jumping off the stage giving high-fives and hand shakes all around, while getting up close and personal to the front-row fans, taking pictures and videos, making sure everyone was having a good time.

Before ending the show, there was one thing Young asked of his audience, to sing his triple-platinum number one single “In Case You Didn’t Know” at the top of their lungs. One verse into the song he stopped and said, “This is going to be on television and I know you can sing louder than that, I’m gonna start the whole song over just to hear you guys louder!” When it played the second time around, every single person in the crowd put their heart and soul into screaming those lyrics back, making it the perfect sing-a-long. He thanked the crowd for supporting country music and making the song the wedding anthem of 2017. When it was time for his last song, the breakout artist brought it home with his debut single and first number one hit, “Sleep Without You”.

It was a night to never forget, both artists with such extraordinary talent, their vocals captivating the audience with every song they sang. Lucky for those who attended, we get to relive a part of the magic we experienced and for those who didn’t can get their chance to watch it next year when it airs on PBS! For New Yorkers, Brett Young will be back in New York City at the PlayStation Theater on December 9th with special guests Tyler Rich and Rachel Wammack. Grab your tickets here.

Opry City Stage Hosts True “In The Round” Style Songwriters Night

On Friday night (Sept. 14), New York City’s Opry City Stage held their first true songwriting round, as part of The Bluebird Cafe Songwriter Series at The Studio. Approximately 100 people were able to experience the iconic Nashville-originated “in the round” phenomenon, right in the heart of Times Square.

Opry City Stage Songwriters Night

Songwriters, Tony Arata, J. Fred Knobloch, Don Schlitz, and gifted harmonica player Jelly Roll Johnson mesmerized the audience with their talents for a two-hour musical awakening. In true “in the round” fashion, each hitmaker took turns going around in a circle, sharing personal anecdotes, stories behind their penned lyrics, engaging with the audience, and of course, singing songs that they have written for famed country music artists.

For the first round, Arata started the night off singing “Here I Am,’ written for Patty Loveless, sharing the importance of the lyrics, focused on how addiction effects relationships. He would later sing some of the crowd’s favorites of the night, including Garth’s Brook’s number one single, “The Dance.”

“I’ll always remember writing this, and right after I did, I played this at The Bluebird Cafe [in Nashville]. Garth [Brooks] and I had just befriended each other, and he said if he ever got a record deal, he was gunna do it. And I was so thrilled, but at the time Garth was doing construction and selling boots, and I was loading trucks at UPS. So obviously we were right on the cusp of greatness.”

On the other hand, Schlitz, who shared that it was his first time taking the trip to play here, stated “I’ll play you the first song I’ve ever had recorded. Up to that point, they just weren’t that good. A lot of songs about trucks. I was so far ahead of my time.”

Fans got a kick out of the writer’s humor and showcased their approval, singing along, as he began to sing “The Gambler,” written for Kenny Rogers. Schlitz played another Roger’s classic later on in the night, “The Greatest,” which the audience also seemed to enjoy.

Next, Knobloch entertained the room with his pop record written for none other than Faith Hill entitled “If My Heart Had Wings.” One of the more poignant moments of the night was the songwriter singing and sharing the background of a song, written for and with Don Williams that was never recorded. Knobloch explained “He became ill and never wound up going to the studio at all. This is the one that almost was,” before singing the lyrics “Everybody needs a rock that they can lean on / you’re mine / you’re mine.”  The room was completely still and quit, during this beautiful tribute.

All along, Johnson showcased his skills, playing harmonica, while the writers sang and played acoustic guitar. The men of the night were inspiring to the listeners, as they truly played a full range of country songs, from songs that everyone loves to songs that were never recorded. Overall, the authentic Nashville-like “in the round” experiences a success, even in “the city that never sleeps.”

Head to www.oprycitystage.com for information and tickets for the next songwriting series slated for Friday, September 28th.

Craig Campbell Plays His First NYC Show at Opry City Stage

After his Swag Session with New York Country Swag, Craig Campbell headed to Opry City Stage in the heart of Times Square to perform his first New York City show for fans.  The 75-minute set took place in The Studio, the fourth floor of the Opry City Stage venue and Campbell sang songs from his previous albums as well as tracks from his latest EP, which was released earlier this month.  Included in his set were “My Little Cowboy” which he wrote when he found out that he was going to be a father, as well as “Family Man”.  “This song may have single-handedly gotten me my record deal,” he said before singing the heartfelt track from his debut 2011 album.

“I’m going to play you some of my favorite country songs of all time,” he said before performing a medley of “Two Dozen Roses” by Shenandoah, “Killing Time” by Clint Black, “Brand New Man” by Brooks and Dunn and “Here’s a Quarter” by Travis Tritt.  “Those are just some of the reasons why I fell in love with country music,” he said after the intimate audience cheered for him.

“I’m excited to be here tonight to play you these new songs,” he said referring to “Me Missing You”, “Mas Tequila” and “Kids in the South” which all are featured on his new EP. These songs have been written over the course of Campbell’s past three years, getting ready to release the best possible music for his fans. With a little bit of everything, each song highlights another side of the singer and his ability to spin real-life stories into song.

Continuing to showcase his talent and versatility he stepped up to the piano to play John Legend’s “All Of Me” and even stated that since his daughter wouldn’t stop singing this song around the house, he had no other choice, but to learn to play it, leading him into the Disney phenomenon “Let It Go” from Frozen.  Putting his own twists on classic tunes, his vocal ability was showcased throughout the night.

Being sure to thank his entire team from Broken Bow Records and BMG, many who were in the crowd, he was humbled by the success and love he felt from the room.  Closing the night with his latest single “See You Try”, “Outskirts of Heaven”, “Keep Them Kisses Coming'” and the hilarious play on words “Fish”, Campbell entertained and proved that listening to his new music was the perfect way for New Yorkers to spend a Wednesday night.

Michael Ray included New York City’s Opry City Stage in one of the many stops he made during his album release week.  From the Grand Ole Opry Stage to Good Morning America and even Ellen, one of his final stops was NYC to play for fans at The Studio at Opry City Stage.

After being introduced by NASH Fm 94.7 DJs Katie Neal and Jesse Addy, Ray opened with “Fan Girl” from the new record as well as his debut number one breakout hit “Kiss You in the Morning”.  He then told the crowd about his brand new album and explained he would be playing each song for them.  Amos which was released this past Friday is an ode to Ray’s grandfather and his conviction when singing each song off the record truly comes to life when hearing the songs live.

“We’re going off of your energy here tonight New York City, we’ve been rolling since 3:45 AM”, he explained, referencing his early call time for Good Morning America. The crowd didn’t disappoint, they were singing along to the songs that were just released as if they had heard them hundreds of times. In between songs on the album Ray also covered Dwight Yoakam’s “Fast As You” as well as David Lee Murphy’s “Dust On The Bottle” after asking if there were any 90’s country fans in the audience tonight.

The intimate room of fans were excited to see such a high energy performance and get to hear each song from Amos live.  “Thanks to NASH FM 94.7 this next song is sitting at number 13 on the charts.  We just played this song on Ellen a few hours ago, this is the first single off the album, here’s “Get To You”, he said before playing his current radio single.  He closed with “Think a Little Less”, another hit from his debut self-titled album.  Take a listen to Amos and head to our Instagram for exclusive videos from the show.

NASH FM 94.7 Presents Chris Janson at Opry City Stage

Chris Janson Opry City Stage Nash FM

Wednesday night (May 30) the newest inductee to the Grand Ole Opry, Chris Janson made his Opry City Stage debut for an intimate performance for NASH FM 94.7 winners.  Janson took the stage after being introduced by NASH FM DJ Jesse Addy to tell stories about his songwriting, his latest album Everybody and to play some of his biggest hits to date.

“I write all of my own songs. I only write and record my own songs no matter what and I am so thankful that it has paid off, thanks to NASH FM especially, it’s paid off,” Janson says at one point during his performance, as he discussed with the audience the origins of his songs “Everybody” and the song he wrote with Preston and Lucas from LOCASH, that they then cut and was a top ten hit, “I Love This Life”.

He also played his breakout hit, and first number one song “Buy Me A Boat” and the title track to his latest album, “Everybody” along with his own version of a song that Tim McGraw recorded called “That’s How I’ll Always Be”.  The intimate setting on the fourth floor of Opry City Stage always allows artists to feel like they can share stories about their music instead of just playing them.  Janson admitted that he was first and foremost a huge punk rock fan growing up, wanting to rebel against his small-town life growing up in Perryville, Missouri.  He explained that he was a fan of The Ramones, Weezer, and Sublime and he knew that the New York City crowd would understand his love for those bands.  He mashed into his set “Undone” by Weezer and The Ramones, “I Wanna Be Sedated”.

Chris Janson Opry City Stage Nash FM

“All I can say is thank you, Jesus, and thank you NASH FM 94.7” he laughed as he explained how incredible it was to have a song of his go number one, right before singing his second number one, “Fix a Drink” then in true New York City fashion, sat down at the piano and played the unmistakeable chords on his harmonica to Billy Joel’s “Piano Man”, which had entire crowd swaying and singing along. As his set came to a close,  he performed his current single, “Drunk Girl”  as he told the crowd that he has four children, two daughters, and two sons and he hopes in the future that his daughters are taken care of like hte girl in the song but more importantly that his sons are good men and listen to the lyrics of the heartfelt song.

Ending the night with an upbeat, Janson version of “Folsom Prison Blues”, Chris Janson proved why he is not only the youngest living member of The Grand Ole Opry but also one of the best entertainers in country music.  Head to our Instagram for exclusive stories and videos from the show.

The Bluebird Cafe Songwriter Series at Opry City Stage

Opry

Friday night The Studio at Opry City Stage hosted its very first Bluebird Cafe Songwriter Series, an event that mimics Nashville’s iconic intimate venue.  Bringing a little taste of a songwriter round to the heart of Times Square, writers JT Harding, Nicolle Gaylon and Chris Destafano took the stage for back to back shows. This “in the round” style performance gives a chance for the songwriters of our favorite songs to sit and explain the writing process to the audience.

The intimate setting of The Studio which seats just under 200 was packed with fans of country music.  There was a quiet excitement buzz in the room as the wait staff took everyone’s food and drink order before the show started.

The writers took the stage and took turns singing songs that they had written for artists in the genre.  JT Harding sang “Different For Girls” a song that was cut by Dierks Bentley and Elle King, then during his next round explained his affinity for sad songs.  “I write a lot of slow songs. It’s a hard lesson to learn in life, as simple as it sounds, but as far as I can tell you can’t make somebody love you, you can only stalk them and hope for the best,” he laughed. “When that doesn’t work, we write songs” he explained as he started Kenny Chesney’s monster hit “Somewhere With You”.

Nicolle Galyon who has had a multitude of hits picked by some of her favorites to perform for the audience including “Automatic” a song she penned with Miranda Lambert just three weeks after giving birth to her daughter and “We Were Us” another Miranda Lambert song that she duets with Keith Urban.  She told the story about her very first time on a plane, her and her mother went to Fan Fair (CMA Fest) in Nashville and she waited in line to get Kenny Chesney’s autograph. Twenty years later, Galyon had a number one hit with Chesney with “All the Pretty Girls”.  “If you stalk country music long enough good things might happen,” she laughed before playing a slowed down version of the song.  She ended her set of songs with two of her radio singles climbing the charts, Lee Brice’s “Boy” and Keith Urban’s “Female” which is nominated for Song of the Year at next month’s ACM Awards.

Last in the lineup, Chris DeStafano kicked off his set of songs with his recent cut collaboration by Carrie Underwood and Ludacris called “Champion”.  “It’s the most special thing in the world as a songwriter to see how the song is affecting and inspiring so many people,” he said.  He also performed “From the Ground Up”, cut by Dan + Shay, an upbeat version of  Luke Bryan’s “Kick the Dust Up” that had the audience clapping along. He ended the night with an emotionally driven version of Carrie Underwood’s “Something in the Water”.

Overall the night was a resounding success, proving that New Yorkers love to feel like they have escaped from the hustle and bustle of the city and are in Nashville even if it is for only a few hours. Head to www.oprycitystage.com for information and tickets for the next songwriter series happening this Friday, March 30th.
