Renee Blair: ‘Seventeen’ – Album Review

Renee Blair debuts her brand new album, Seventeen, available now, November 5th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the incredible new record below.

Renee Blair is a singer-songwriter, whose artistry soars throughout her music. It has been a long time coming, but Blair finally released her brand new project today. Blair’s new album Seventeen is here!

The seventeen song project is full of brand new songs and tracks the singer has released over the last couple of years. The record is a true culmination of her tireless work ethic. Kicking off with songs like “Gotta Quit Drinkin” and “Heart’s In Your Head,” both songs depict the soft and sweet side of Blair.

“But when your heart’s in your head // And it’s doing all the thinking // When your will ain’t as strong // As the well you been drinkin’ // When you know what you should do // But you do the other thing instead // You put your hand on a flame // When your heart’s in your head”

Tales of heartbreak, falling in love, and everything in between continue as the album progresses. Fan-favorite, “Heatin’ Up My Summer” portrays a hot new romance, while “Soon As I’m Happy” is that age-old story about an ex always coming back at the most inopportune times.

Previously released songs “Turn Up the Night” and “Girlfriend” are tracks four and five. The former is a sassy and celebratory track that is part of Blair’s self-proclaimed “party track” of tunes, which includes “Downtowned Up”. “Girlfriend,” first released in 2019, is a relatable song about wanting to be with someone, who is perfect, but not single.

Similarly, “Handsome” is another honest and swoon-worthy song, tinged with R&B flavor. The love song is a true inspiration to all of us, clearing stemming from the part of Blair, who knows what true love is made of.

“He brings me flowers when it ain’t even my birthday // He fills the bath up when he knows I’ve had the worst day // And when I’m talkin’, I can tell he’s really listenin’ even when I’m bitchin’ // He knows how to fix it with the right thing to say”

On one of our favorite songs, “You Did,” Blair’s vulnerability is on full display. She sings about not knowing if she could love again. Fortunately, a man was able to help put her heart back together and convince her again that love is worth it.

On the flip side, Blair sings about an on and off again relationship on “Better Off.” “Wearin’ It Well” and “Here I Am” are other songs that convey the confusion of love and heartbreak. On the contrary, “Me Tonight” is a vulnerable song, where Blair wants to be with someone without worrying about the consequences.

Another standout track on the record is “Get the Girl.” The advice driven song is written to a man by the songstress. Blair shares all the secrets to a successful relationship on the track.

Overall, Blair’s new album Seventeen was worth the wait! The singer-songwriter shines vocally and her lyrics rival the best songwriters’ in town. She is the real deal, and we hope everyone falls in love with this incredible full-length project.

Renee Blair Releases Brand New Song “Turn Up The Night”

Renee Blair’s new song, “Turn Up The Night” is out now, August 27th, on all streaming platforms.  Take a look below as we dig into the track.

We have been huge fans of Renee Blair since she first burst onto the music scene back in 2018. The talented singer-songwriter continues to impress with each new release. Although Blair typically releases songs that she co-writes, today she is releasing a track she did not have a hand in penning but fell in love with all the same. Her brand new song and fan-favorite, “Turn Up The Night” dropped today.

During our conversation with Blair, she shared how special this song is to her. “I feel like I have a little bit of a golden ticket by sheer ‘right place/ right song’,” she begins. “When he [Kane Brown] was working on the demo, I knew it was just an undeniable hit, an absolute smash.” Written by Kane Brown, Corey Crowder, Jordan Schmidt, and Matt McGinn, the song became hers after Brown passed on it for his latest project. “At the last minute when Kane didn’t end up putting it on his record, I kind of begged and pleaded, ‘will you guys please give me the chance to sing this song?'”

“Get everybody feeling right in the neighborhood // hey it’s the freaking weekend, we got to turn it to ten // Doing whatever we like // If we’re going out, it ain’t gunna be quiet // It’s going down, down / We bout to turn up the night”

The single is sassy and celebratory! The perfect song to jam to before a night out with friends. Blair manages to elevate the song vocally too. According to the songstress, “this song had been my show opener and still is, and probably always will be. It’s such a good way to kick off the live aspect and get the crowd hyped.”

Finally, Blair promises that more new music is on its way. Calling it a “party pack,” the singer has some more fun-loving songs coming out soon. She also hinted at a collaboration with a top female songstress in the industry, coming out in October. Stay tuned!

Renee Blair Releases New Single “Soon As I’m Happy”

Renee Blair - Soon As I’m Happy

Over the last few months, Renee Blair has released singles, alternative acoustic tracks, a collaboration with RVSHVD and a debut EP The Ones to Slow Dance To, which seemingly widened the spotlight under this upcoming female country artist. Though, “Girlfriend”, her July 2019 single release, initially launched a career for Blair in the music industry by being her first song to reach one million streams.

Now, Blair has released a new single “Soon As I’m Happy”, which suggests one’s journey to happiness, however, after listening to the song, the lyrics refer to the emotion as being just that; an emotion. Happiness is much more complicated and intricate than simply opening its doors. The tricky thing is that the door has a loose doorknob that lets other emotions inside its walls. Sadness, loneliness, anxiety, helplessness, and it can seep into experiences and people from your past.

“I’m out there on the town having the time of my life / Walking taller, feeling higher than I have in awhile / You gotta rain down on my parade now / As soon as I, soon as I, soon as I, soon as I / Go and find somebody that I actually like / No, I don’t ever think about you, boy that’s when you decide / You wanna hold me, you gotta have me / As soon as I soon as I, soon as I, soon as I’m happy”

“Soon as I’m Happy” is, at its core, a break-up song. Still, at the same time, there is a happy overtone with a clear dynamic of moving on and, finally, being happy again. There are three, arguably four, personalities present whereas each accomplishes a different emotion. Past figures and experiences generally inflict heartache, while current times release a freeing, bright recovery.

In November, Blair was titled one of the CMT ‘Next Women of Country’, which has only fueled the fiery heart and drive that Blair possesses. And, “Soon As I’m Happy” is one of the many projects fans will hear from the singer-songwriter that showcases that artistry.

Summer is Sizzling Hot with Renee Blair’s ‘Heatin’ Up My Summer’

Heatin' Up my Summer Renee Blair

Rising Nashville singer-songwriter, Renee Blair, brings the heat with her new jam, “Heatin’ Up My Summer”. This release follows her early 2020 debut EP “The Ones to Slow Dance To”, which featured a powerful and delicate range of ballads. The new single showcases her versatility as an artist, as Blair delivers an expertly crafted country song with considerable pop influences.

The song begins with a captivating blend of country strums and synth-pop beats. The ultramodern sounds allow for Blair’s fresh and smooth vocals to shine and her confidence as an artist is palpable. This light-hearted track details the excitement and intensity of a summer romance, with sassy lyrics about someone pining over their new love interest.

Leading up to the first chorus, Blair boldly sings clever plays on words and keeps the flirtation levels high throughout.

“With the way that you / undress me with your eyes / it ain’t even June / but boy I know that I / I want you heating up my summer / keeping me up all night / don’t you dare go make me wonder/ what kissing you is like”

Electrifying pop beats throughout convey a strong feeling of movement, and the audience is constantly excited about where the song will flow next. The listening journey is especially enjoyable, as each verse and chorus feature a unique vibe that ultimately connects into one cohesive song.

The artist belts summer-themed lines throughout the song filled with flirty innuendos, “Baby don’t you want to put your hands / on my body / where the sun don’t tan”.

The listener is given vivid and suggestive imagery throughout, further pulling them into this dreamy summer fantasy. This song could not be more perfect for hanging the pool or driving with the roof down this summer! It exudes confidence from Blair the whole way through and we look forward to hearing her future releases, as she is bound to share fresh and new sounds.

Renee Blair Drops 2 New Jams “Summadat” and “Wearin’ It Well”

Renee Blair Summadat Wearin It Well

From the first time we spoke to Renee Blair for a Swag Spotlight feature, we knew she had something special. Her St. Louis roots shine brightly through her music and today, she released two brand new songs, “Summadat” and “Wearin’ It Well”. Both tracks sonically channel the modern country vibe, with pop influences. As listeners gear up for another warm weekend across the country, the former is “easy, breezy”  and perfect to blast with your windows down.  The latter is empowering, an almost fake-it-til-you-make-it moment, a story about a broken heart powering through. “Wearin’ It Well” is for anyone who felt like staying home in sweats crying over a situation but decided to live their life instead.

“I’ve got my Covergirl coverin’ up the tears that I’ve cried / I’ve got a stranger dancin’ with his hands on your favorite Levis / I’ve got a heart still broken I’ve been going through hell but tonight, I’m going out and I’m wearin’ it, wearin’ it well”

“I think it is a huge testament to where music is right now, it’s becoming very cross-genre. I think it’s awesome,” she says of one of her main influences growing up, Nelly working with Florida Georgia Line.  “The fans are the best judgment, they just like good music and they don’t care what you call it and I think it is a great way to just bring everyone together.” Blair, who co-wrote both tracks continues to change the game, releasing smartly written lyrics and tracks that beg for repeat spins.

Check out more from Renee Blair in the video below when we caught up with her for a Live Swag Session back in January 2019, where she performed “Better Off”, “Me Tonight” and chatted about her influences, songwriting, and future plans.

6 Undiscovered Female Artists You Should Be Listening To

We’re loving the changing of the tides that is occurring in the country music scene. It’s been an exciting month for the ladies, as Maren Morris’ song “GIRL” went number 1 on country radio and Grammy-nominated songwriter, Nicolle Galyon unveiled her newest project, an all-female label named Songs & Daughters.

Female musicians are making sure their voices are heard in the industry and delivering songs with lyrics that aim to empower women. We’ve already shared 6 of our favorite rising female artists that we are loving, but here are 6 more undiscovered, yet extremely talented female artists that deserve the spotlight too!

1. Lacy Cavalier

Listen: “Cheating On U”

One of our newest Swag Sessions alumni, Lacy Cavalier is taking the music industry by storm! She is sassy, beautiful, and passionate, with killer vocals to match. At only 22 years old, it’s only a matter of time until everyone knows her name. She just released her newest EP, k i’m done, which is filled with heartfelt, honest, and relatable songs that will be stuck in your head in no time! Make sure to give it a listen and keep up with her via Instagram and Twitter.

2. Hailey Whitters

Listen: “Ten Year Town”

Singer-songwriter Hailey Whitters is one to look out for! She’s no stranger to the music industry, as she’s been songwriting since she was a teenager. Currently, she is holding her own on tour with prolific singer-songwriter, Lori McKenna and we caught her set just last month at City Winery. Later this year, she will open for superstar Maren Morris. Whitters is poised, honest, and primed for success. Listen to her song “10 Year Town” to get a taste of her unique talent and be sure to follow her on Instagram and Twitter.

3. Hannah Ellis

Listen: “Friends Like These”

Another artist that we are loving is Hannah Ellis. She performed at our inaugural ‘Babes, Booze & Brunch’ event back in 2018, as well as, opened for Walker Hayes at Mercury Lounge the same year. She is a clever lyricist and songstress that truly sings from her heart. Check out debut single, “ILY So What” and “Home and Hometown” which she sang for us during a live Swag Session back in 2018. Most recently, she was chosen as one of CMT’s Next Women of Country and released her brand new single, “Friends Like These.” Keep up with her endeavors via Instagram and Twitter!

4. Renee Blair

Listen: “Girlfriend”

Our next artist signed a publishing deal with SMACK in 2017 and has been a powerhouse ever since. She’s opened up for many great performers in the industry, including Mitchell Tenpenny, Willie Nelson, and Michael Ray; however, she is a stunning performer in her own right. She premiered her newest song “Girlfriend,” earlier this month, which explores the inner workings of her heart as she wishes for a man, who is unfortunately in a relationship. Both a Swag Spotlight and Swag Sessions alum, we know how spectacular Blair is and can’t wait for more people to recognize her talent. Stay in the loop via her Instagram and Twitter.

5. Lauren Duski

Listen: “The Weather (Grandpa’s Song)”

Lauren Duski got her start on NBC’s The Voice, but she is proving her staying power with her independently released debut EP entitled Midwestern Girl. She plays with the gamut of emotions on the heartfelt record, especially on songs, “The Weather (Grandpa’s Song)” and fan-favorite “Costume Party.” She earned her spot on this list because of her beautiful songs and unique song-writing. Learn more about Duski in our Swag Spotlight with her, as well as, by following her on Instagram and Twitter.

6. Kelleigh Bannen

Listen: “Happy Birthday”

Rounding out our list is seasoned singer-songwriter, Kelleigh Bannen. The Nashville native is a vocally-gifted storyteller. She delivers epic lyrics in her songs, “Happy Birthday,” “Deluxe,” and her newest track, “Faith In You.” Bannen is an artist, who is equally as impressive on emotionally-heavy songs, as well as, sassy uptempo tracks. We featured her in a Swag Spotlight back in 2018, and we can’t wait to see where her career continues to take her. Be sure to follow her on Instagram and Twitter.

We hope you add these talented ladies to your music collection!

Renee Blair Questions Her Perfect Man in “Girlfriend”

Renee Blair signed a publishing deal with SMACK in 2017 and has been on the rise ever since. Writing hits including “Better Off” and “Gotta Quit Drinking,” Blair is gaining recognition where it is due. Opening for the legendary Willie Nelson and others as well as labelmate Walker Hayes, Michael Ray, Billy Currington, Mitchell Tenpenny and more. Blair visited us earlier this year for a Swag Session as well as a Swag Spotlight the year before. She has been on our radar for a while now and we know that her new song is going to impress.

Over the last two months, the “Better Off” singer has been hinting at new music and lyrics like “why you gotta be perfect” and “I don’t want to wait my turn,” leaving fans what the new single could be about. She shared on Instagram earlier this week that she “met the perfect guy. I thought he was the one, but he had one flaw, he had a GIRLFRIEND.” And just like that, her latest hit song was announced!

Released today, July 12th, the new single was written by Blair with Matt McGinn and Jordan Schmidt will bring a summer heat to your playlist. Her blend of country and R&B makes for such a unique style that invites everyone to sing and dance. In the song, she keeps asking herself questions like “why you gotta be breaking my heart before we even start?” and “what are you trying to do to me?” The track is relatable for anyone wishing that someone was single and not taken, it’s is something we have all felt a time or two, making it the perfect situation to write about. Although Blair puts a twist on what could be a somber song and turns it into an upbeat jam. We have seen photos of her in the studio this year and are hoping for more tunes to add to our summer playlist soon!

[Listen] Renee Blair Releases Clever New Single “Better Off”

“I feel stupid telling my mom, one more time that we’re back together,” St. Louis native Renee Blair sings at the beginning of her new song, “Better Off.” Honest lyrics like that that are bound to nab a listener’s attention immediately. On the sassy new single, released today, rising country star Blair tells an on-and-off again lover that they’re just “better off” being eternally off.

The song features a unique mix of instrumentation, vocals, and lyrics to create a groovy mid-tempo track that’s oh-so-relatable. Interestingly, upon her signing to Shane McAnally’s SMACK Songs, the superstar writer-producer-mastermind revealed, “She is determined to write the right songs to showcase her unique brand of R&B inspired Country music. She is a true artist in every sense.”

That R&B inspired country music is on full display here, having been tossed into a blender with a hint of pop, creating a catchy melody that’s sure to be stuck in your head. You’ll be singing along after one listen and what’s especially exciting about “Better Off” is the unique way Blair uses the song’s lyrics. She uses her timing and phrasing cleverly here, revealing that “maybe we’re just better off…off” and “we’re kinda like our clothes…on again, off again…” Knowing she’s stuck in an endless cycle of breaking up and making up, Blair suggests that maybe this relationship is better off being finally and permanently off.

Blair first played the song for New York Country Swag back in January when we hosted her for one of our Live Swag Sessions, check out the exclusive acoustic version below.

While the Nashville transplant grew up on the likes of Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, and Tanya Tucker, one of her biggest influences is rapper Nelly, and there’s a hint of that cross-genre feel here. “I think it is a huge testament to where music is right now, it’s becoming very cross-genre. I think it’s awesome,” she told NYCountry Swag of the rapper’s collaboration with Florida Georgia Line. “The fans are the best judgment, they just like good music and they don’t care what you call it and I think it is a great way to just bring everyone together.

Co-written by Blair, McAnally, Walker Hayes, Matt McGinn, and Jordan Schmidt, “Better Off” is a great follow-up to her previous release, “Me Tonight,” which showed a softer side of the singer-songwriter. She is currently putting the finish touches on her debut SMACK Songs EP, produced by McAnally.

“Better Off” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

SMACKSongs Stuns Nashville With The Ultimate Writers Round

SMACKSongs Writers Round

Photo via SmackSongs Instagram//Taken by Rachel Deeb

What is better than a concert on a Monday night? Nothing. Although this concert was unlike any other for multiple reasons. One, it was at the Listening Room Cafe which is known for its intimate setting and finding new upcoming singers and songwriters. SMACKSongs took over the night for a round called SMACK and Friend’s making it the ultimate writers round. SMACKSongs is a Nashville-based music publishing company founded in 2012. They are proudly home to some of the industry’s top songwriters, producers, and artists, including Shane McAnally himself, as founder and CEO. The show featured McAnally, Josh Osborne, Teddy Robb, Aaron Eshuis, Matt McGinn, Ryan Beaver, Josh Jenkins, Kylie Morgan, Renee Blair and many more!

McAnally and Osborne got the night started by singing some of their hit songs including “Drinking Problem” and “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16”. Bringing out their first set of writers, including Renee Blair and Teddy Robb, each singer performed a new single or one that has previously been cut. Teddy Robb previewed a new song called “Tell Me How” that has not yet been released but never the less got the crowd on their feet applauding. Renee Blair also took the same approach singing a new song called “Me Tonight”.

In between each set of writers, McAnally and Osborne shared stories of their journey without forgetting to add some jokes along the way. Talking about how they once played a song for Kenny Chesney on his plane that was already taken but he loved it so much they had to steal it back from no other than Little Big Town. “American Kids” then became Chesney’s #1 single off his album The Big Revival. Other artists that played included Brandon Radcliff singing his song “Rules of Breaking Up” and Josh Jenkins sang “21” which was cut by Jimmie Allen on his latest album Mercury Lane and “Thinking About You”.

Each time McAnally introduced a singer you could tell in his voice how proud of each one of them he was. He even said himself that the only people he could be more proud of are his kids, showing genuine gratitude and emotion as the night progressed. Throughout the night he talked about how important it was to “find your tribe” and the people that are willing to hustle with you in order to chase your dreams. Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne have created not only a powerhouse of songwriters, producers, and artists but a community that displays the true meaning of family within the country music business.  Head to our Instagram and check out exclusive videos from the night.
