Tenille Townes Asks God Some Important Questions in “Jersey on the Wall”

Tenille Townes Jersey On the Wall

Canadian singer-songwriter and one of our 2019 Artists to Watch and Swag Spotlight alumni, Tenille Townes gets deep in her song “Jersey on the Wall (I’m Just Asking)”.  Townes paints the picture of a high school gym where a number 27 jersey hangs up on the wall for an unfortunate reason. It’s there not because the star athlete took the Tigers to the finals that year but because she didn’t survive a car accident. During the chorus, she rattles off all the questions she has for God when she makes it to heaven including “Why can’t you stop a car from crashing?”

“How does the sky change in a minute? / How do you keep this big rock spinning? / If you got your hands on everything that happens / Then why couldn’t You stop that car from crashing? / Forgive me, I’m just asking”

During our interview, Townes talks about the writing process for “Jersey on the Wall” saying: “There was something really special in that room that day. I feel like creativity, in general, is a very spiritual experience for me and that day was beautiful evidence of that. I had just been to a town in New Brunswick that had been through a really horrible accident that 5 of the kids in their high school, one of which had passed away, I kept in touch with them and flew there again and sat in the back of the gym for the High School graduation and saw Danielle’s Jersey hanging up on the wall and I said wow do I have questions for God.”

Townes has been including this tear-jerking track on her setlists for Dierks Bentley’s Burning Man Tour. We saw two stunning performances of it at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on July 26th and at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Long Island, NY on August 2nd.
